Use binaries and how to get started
Hi, I am new to openPASS and I am interested in trying it out. However, I find it a bit hard to get started. Perhaps, there are some additions to the docs to make them a bit more user-friendly. I will report my step-by-step process as a beginner:
- My entry point to openPASS was the website https://openpass.eclipse.org/. I think many people like me would start there.
- Then, I downloaded the binaries for Windows: https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/openpass/releases/opSimulation/openPASS_SIM_v1.1.0.zip and unzipped those files locally, which resulted in a folder
opSimulation
locally. - Now, the docs in that folder (the same as the one in https://openpass.eclipse.org/architecture/#documentation) do not explain what to do next. How do I get started? What do I click? Do I need to install anything? The docs assume that I am compiling the tools from source so beginners may get lost. Would it be possible to add a section in the beginning, explaining that binaries are available and new user can start using those?
- Assuming that I have everything to test openPASS, I followed the Scenario-based simulation tutorial. It seems to run and I have obtained some output files. The docs do not mention how to move further, however, like how to visualize the results. I bet people would be thrilled to get to see the 3D visualizer (opVisualizer?)! EDIT: There are some references to a deprecated QT based GUI, but nothing on the opVisualizer as far as I can tell.
- I find some more info in the video linked in the homepage (https://openpass.eclipse.org/), but there they assume that I have
opVisualizer
already installed---which I do not. I do not find any reference of the visualizer anywhere else but in the repo https://gitlab.eclipse.org/eclipse/openpass/opvisualizer. In the repo, it seems that I need to compile the visualizer, but to understand how, I need to compile the documentation. EDIT: There are some instructions here but, unfortunately, they do not work (opvisualizer#2 (closed))
As a beginner, I find the whole process a bit discouraging. Am I overlooking something? What resources do you recommend to get started?
