The Community day takes place on Monday Oct 24. After a call for participation, each community meet in a different room during the day and schedule the activities they consider ideal for their own communities. The shared spaces of the venue can be also used for meetings and gatherings that day.

Oniro is joining the IoT and Edge communities during this day. The room assigned has a capacity for around 120 people in class configuration.

This activity takes place throughout the entire conference but it has its climax on Thursday Oct 27th afternoon. The purpose is to show the results of different projects working together at engineering level. The facilities will be set up for this kind of technical work and some hardware will be provided (sponsored). The different groups involved can bring additional elements they might need for the demonstration.

The activity is lead by the IoT&Edge projects and some others will be joining as the event approaches. There is an initial architecture proposal for the main activity. Others can be proposed. Check /events-oniro!5 to learn about the current proposal.

BoFs are welcome at EclipseCon 2022. There will be a Call for BoFs on September 12th with rooms allocated to it. Some additional rooms will be allocated for BoFs proposed right at the event. Rooms assigned for BoFs are usually not the biggest ones. It goes from 12 up to 100 depending on the acceptance of the BoF.

Rooms are assigned to BoFs for around an hour and there will be room for about 24 BoFs in total.

EclipseCon 2022\[1\] is the main face to face event organised by the Eclipse Foundation. It takes place\[2\] in Ludwigsburg, Stuttgart area, Germany, from October 24th to 27th. This is the event where the different ecosystems of organizations and communities of developers invoved in Eclipse Foundation projects meet. The event is a productive mix of talks, technical project updates, business development, community engagement, hacking and key topics discussions activities.

|
Oniro\[3\] will have a strong presence at the event in both front: the ecosystem with the participation of the Oniro Member\[4\] representatives and the community, with the attendance of many of our key contributors. Several of the talks of the main program will be related with Oniro as well as different technical and community sessions.

|
|
EclipseCon 2022 represents the best opportunity to learn about the project from any angle, talking directly with those heavily involved in the project. we would be delighted to have you\[5\] at EclipseCon 2022. We would do our best to make your participation productive learning about Oniro and Eclipse Foundation.

Building on our experience in driving YOCTO projects to compliance, first and foremost Eclipse Oniro, we will guide the audience to get a grasp on how much it creates complication and requires a solid external toolchain to govern FOSS compliance and even insecurity (CVEs) managements and reporting. A project could fail spectacularly on both sides if the pitfalls are not adequately flagged and a well crafted process is not put in place. There is more in a recipe than meets the eye. | EDDIE - Enabling Distributed Intelligence in Oniro | Stefan Schmidt | [Accepted](https://www.eclipsecon.org/2022/sessions/eddie-enabling-distributed-intelligence-oniro/) | The EDDIE project, within the Oniro working group, has the objective to design a middleware capable of giving to the applications and services an unified global view on cross-device resources. The various devices are not seen any more as individual entities with specific resources, but as a unified pool of virtual resources. Intelligent orchestration of the available resources will allow an efficient use, as well as, some very unique use cases e.g. peripherals like camera, storage and audio from any device in the network could operate like a local peripheral. They would be instantly compatible with your local applications. Use your doorbell camera in your mobile camera application and the surround audio system for your alarm system without the need for dedicated integrations for each ecosystem. In this talk Stefan will give you an introduction to the project, its goals, milestones and implementation. He will show the current development status on Linux and Zephyr in Oniro and look ahead into 2023. |

| Oniro and how to build a production oriented, open source, reference OS for IoT devices in no time. The role of standards and market focus as cure for NIH syndrome. | Davide Ricci | Submitted | The session will look at how the Oniro stack was built starting from a business problem definition and moving through further integration of de facto standards, widely used technologies, and compliance processes/test suites. The audience will be exposed to the thought process of prioritizing and focusing on minimum viable early deliveries with incrementally more complex functionalities and use cases. The audience will learn the standards analyzed and selected by the Oniro project to be compliant with in order to enable maximum interoperability among devices and smooth the migration from similar alternatives. Some of these standards: bitbake and yocto project, linux and zephyr, musl and GCC, openchain, project matter, openharmony,... The audience will also become familiar with areas that require standardization yet have not been standardized yet such as system update, semantic web and autonomous cooperative devices, device management, user registration and data handling, and device onboarding processes and data structure. No prior knowledge is required. Hopefully, attendees will bring home some lessons about avoiding NIH syndrome in order to gain maximum market viability while focusing efforts in those areas that can lead to innovation. |

In the Eclipse Oniro project, along the distributed OS for consumer electronics, we're proposing a collection of "blueprints" use cases and their implementations using embedded software on reference hardware. Those minimal viable products are not only used for demonstration or validation purposes, but they can serve as a base to create production-ready solutions. Early development of Oniro started with basic blueprints from touch panel, door lock, keypad to more sophisticated ones like vending machine or IoT gateway. Each of those achievements are targeting different uses case and different environments, but many steps can be factorized from building process, customization to security or IP compliance scanning. To inspire devices makers, today we're focusing on recent works done for Oniro "goofy" release with a more advanced scenario that show interactions between wearable and a music system. We'll explain how to replicate it and deploy firmware from sources to devices and why Oniro can be flexible to create the device of your dream. |

| What goes into creating a high-quality Operating System? | Amit Kucheria | Submitted | Imagine a small team working on an embedded device - it could be a simple light bulb, a security alarm, a set top box or an internet gateway. Their mission is to ship their application on this device. Typically, this team juggles their time between implementing their core application with bringing up a BSP, cobbling together an OTA solution to allow future updates, managing their CI pipeline and “implementing security”. Unfortunately, many engineering teams rarely have enough time, capacity or expertise to think about the nuances of security policy (for kernel, toolchain, networking, CVEs), trusted boot and key management, update policy, product hardening and IP compliance. They end up doing the bare minimum to ship a product. We’re not even talking about maintenance yet - very few companies budget for multi-year maintenance of the device software. Governments are starting to pay attention as thousands of such devices are connected to the internet - inside the home as well as in critical industrial and utility infrastrastructure. This talk focuses on what goes into creating a high-quality embedded operating system that companies can adopt to build high-quality secure products on top of. Using opinionated defaults to reduce decision fatigue while keeping the operating system secure out-of-the-box is one of the key goals of the Eclipse Oniro. You will hear about the steps already taken to build such a system, what we want to work on in the next 18 months and how you can help. |

| [Which UI frameworks for IoT devices ? Oniro provides several approaches for human/machine interaction, from local basic display to full featured remote control. This talk will focus on displaying data on Oniro devices depending on use cases or devices' constraints. Over the course of the Oniro project development several application frameworks have been evaluated. All of them have their benefits and drawbacks that are worth sharing with the community. For instance, LVGL Lightweight graphics library can be used to create portable applications on both flavors of Oniro (Linux and Zephyr) but require writing low-level code in C. Alternatively, popular Flutter engine to run modern portable mobile apps can be integrated on Oniro Linux Core. Hardware support and related challenges will be explained, of course Oniro is flexible enough to host other libraries like Qt or GTK and Web runtimes. |
