This PR is over 1000 source lines in size, so a review is strictly needed. There aren't any issues here, apart from the size. There are some bug fixes, additions to samples, new samples and test changes.

I added the source as a direct patch download, rather than a zip, as it's easy to do from GitHub, zips not so much (as far as I'm aware). I hope it works for the automation.
