Update date format on news and events widget

I find the current date format too verbose for many of the UIs we build.

e.g.

I suggest changing the date format to reflect the writing style guide. We should also omit the day name e.g. "Monday"

The time should be opt-in and included via data attribute. Or perhaps we don't display time at all?
