This issue is to accept nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the 2022 Eclipse Community Awards. Nominations open on May 2 and close on May 31.
The Lifetime Achievement award is given to those individuals who have helped shape the Eclipse community through a long history of contributions to Eclipse projects and active participation in our community.
I would like to nominate Thomas Watson for this award. Thomas has been for a long time the main maintainer of Eclipse Equinox, enabling the basis for the Eclipse Platform and has been a major contributor to OSGi success in general. His technical expertise is not questionable, and he's been very helpful to everyone who's needed his help, with high quality support that can often been seen as a form of mentoring. He's also demonstrated a lot of enthusiasm in making the Equinox project more open to new contributors also in term of infrastructure with the move to GitHub. And the results are here, the Equinox project has received more contributions from more people. Thomas is the main person to thank for that.
Hey everyone, just a reminder that the nominations are closing on the 31st and that you or your friend are getting your chance to be featured at Eclipsecon in October. As well as being showcased on our organization's social media and other forms of company correspondence. Don't miss the deadline
Jay has been a long term JDT Committer and Lead. He is currently also serving as a PMC member.
He has been leading the Eclipse Compiler support for Java (ECJ) for new versions since Java 8 to Java 18 and now leading the effort for Java 19 support. He has strong technical expertise in JDT, and he's been very active in bugzilla and forums and now on github, helping Contributors and responding to the queries.
That’s a great nomination!
Jay has been the person who was always there in JDT – from the time I joined the Eclipse team around a decade back [but of course he was there a few years before as well], I’ve seen him being there - he has been the “The Wall” [Rahul Dravid for the cricketing fans] of the Eclipse Team in general and the JDT Team in specific – He has been there always through the thick and thin. His calm but firm nature in dealing with the issues that crop up has always helped many of us to focus on our energies to do what we do best. He never hesitated to take up items that required him to acquire a broad range of knowledge, rather than limiting himself to the depths of a specific part. Together with the above, his eye for the detail – or rather, the completeness – has helped JDT to smooth sail the releases without any problems – be it in terms of owning up the testing, or the release points, or the marketplace, or the unenviable code-related release jobs etc – these points are often overlooked but quite important. And many a time invisible – but Jay did a meticulous job in getting these through on time, every time – Java support releases heavily depended and depends on him. His ability to collaborate with the right persons for different type of work and his to-the-point discussions have been helping the team to get issues sorted out in optimum time intervals. His recent entry to PMC has helped the team garner confidence in having burning issues addressed and his continued presence will only help Eclipse /JDT reach greater highs. Thanks Jay and all the best for your nomination!
I want to nominate Jonah Graham. He does so much work to keep Orbit in shape, to ensure that the Eclipse Packaging Project keeps rolling, and he chairs the Eclipse Planning Council, all in addition to his tireless work on CDT. Few people contribute to Eclipse as broadly as Jonah nor with as much impact on the downstream consumers, both the framework adopters and the end users.
I would like to nominate Jonas Helming, because I can't think of anyone else more consistent, pervasive, and passionate at Eclipse than Jonas. He is GM at EclipseSource Munich, and over the past 10 years has been a mentor to many, and committer on a wide range of Eclipse projects from the platform, to EMF, CDT.cloud, Edapt, and Theia. Jonas is also a technical advocate and writer, great not just at explaining and hyping our projects, but how they fit into the broader ecosystem. He is currently Theia project lead, and chair of the Eclipse Cloud Development working group marketing committee.
Jonas is a skilled and passionate advocate for Eclipse, and his dedication to many projects over a decade make him an obvious candidate for Lifetime Achievement Award.
