Register media type (aka MIME type) for AsciiDoc
There's currently no official mime type registered for AsciiDoc. As a result, any attempt to include a MIME type for AsciiDco in a MIME type database is being rejected. Therefore, we need to go through the formal process of getting it registered. This is also an important element of defending the AsciiDoc trademark and brand. When an official mime type is established, operating systems will recognize AsciiDoc files with the designated file extension and label them with a corresponding icon.
Here are the instructions for registering a MIME type: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6838#section-5
Here's the form for registering a MIME type: https://iana.org/form/media-types
The proposed mime type is as follows:
name: text/asciidoc
extensions: .adoc, .asciidoc
The name text/asciidoc
follows the convention used for Markdown (see https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7763). This proposed name would fall in the standard tree. In other words, the name text/asciidoc
would need to be added to the IANA registry of media types. In order for that to happen, an RFC describing the format (similar to RFC 7763) is required. More to this point, note Section 6 of RFC 7763 (IANA Considerations).
The requirements to get this name included in the mime-db project are slightly less stringent and may be requirements the AsciiDoc Language project already meets:
all we need is a concrete specification to link to. If you publish it as the authority of AsciiDoc on whatever the website is for that ... that's good enough, because that's all I'm even looking for.
This issue was ported from a matching issue in the Asciidoctor repository. This issue has been refiled here to track this issue within the AsciiDoc Working Group since registering this MIME type falls under the duties of the AsciiDoc WG. The former issue will be closed and redirected here.
